FROM THE MAYOR'S DESK

Welcome to 'UPTOWN' a newsletter from the Town of Castalia. This letter will be published bi-monthly and it will include news items from the Town and Nash Co. Also news from our Churches and Schools, Fire Department, Businesses, Civic Orgs. and "Citizen's Corner". We are asking your help with "Citizen's Corner"; please submit recipes, poems, jokes, and sayings that you would like to share with others. Also please share job promotions, children's school achievements and any accomplishments you are proud of sharing.

Why the title "UPTOWN" ? See it this way U (united) P (people) TOWN; in that light we request your participation. Please enjoy the issue and contact us with your contribution.

FROM THE COUNTY

The county commissioners meet the first Monday each month. Mrs. Lou Richardson is our representative on the Board. She welcomes contacts from the people. Call her at 459-2784. In June the board voted 4-3 to raise county tax from .66 per $100 property valuation to .70. Effects us all.

FROM THE TOWN

In May death claimed commissioner M. Patterson. Again, we extend sympathy to the Patterson family. The board has appointed Eva Rice to the seat. We welcome Eva to the board. We are organizing a Disaster Team that will be able to step in and administer necessary relief until other help can get to our community. We are in the process of building and stocking a supply closet. Your contribution to this effort will be greatly appreciated. Contact the Town 459-3668 to see how you can help. Hopefully our area will never be a disaster scene but we want to be ready.

July 4th was a great day! It started with a fabulous Car Show; approx. 40 cars participated with a background of "Golden Oldies" music. At 2:00 a grand Parade, about 100 units moved up Main Street. The program of patriotic speakers, music and other musical entertainment lasted til FIREWORKS!!! Our flag flew proudly as we celebrated the 230th birthday of our country.

GOD BLESS AMRERICA.

 CITIZEN'S CORNER

We welcome Lela Rae Parks to our town. She now resides at 9041 Main Street. Lela Rae operates the Restaurant Grill at the corner of NC 58 and NC 56 and is already a part of our community.

Who are the Castalia Bombers? They are Young Castalia Citizens; they wear "heavenly blue" shirts and are a group (boys and girls) who form a Softball Team. These Bombers are coached by Lisa Battle and they play mostly on Saturdays at Moore's Ball Park. They do travel to Hollister some and they compete with other churches and community teams. According to Lisa the season has just begun and will last on into September. Check on these Bombers and get on out to see them play. Go Bombers!!

PERFECT SUMMER TREAT

Get out the old hand turned or electric ice cream freezer, some crushed ice and rock salt and make up this good Home Made Ice Cream

  • 4 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 can condensed milk
  • 1/2 gal. regular milk
  • 1 tea. vanilla
  • 2 cups fruit (sweetened)

Mash the fruit, add the other ingredients and blend real well using about 2/3 of the regular milk at first. Pour in freezer canister, you may need remainder of milk to reach fill line. Set the canister in freezer tub and layer ice and rock salt around canister. Start turning, adding more ice and salt as needed. Ice cream is ready when electric freezer stops or hand turned becomes hard to turn. So-o-o-o good!

A THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

I am only one, but still I am one; I cannot do everything; but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.
