Happy New Year: May the New Year bring, Joy, Happiness and Prosperity to All

From the Mayor’s Desk
New Year’s Resolutions? Why make them? Why don’t we keep them? Let’s do a different project this year. In preparation I’d like to share these words of Abigail Van Buren with you.

You Can Beat the Odds and Be a Winner, Too
Bury him in the snows of Valley Forge, and you have George Washington.
Raise him in abject poverty and you have Abraham
Lincoln.
Subject him to bitter religious prejudice, and you have a Disraeli.
Spit on him and crucify him, and you have Jesus Christ.
Label him “too stupid to learn,” and you have a Thomas Edison.
Tell her she’s too old to start painting at eighty, and you a Grandma Moses.
Have him or her born black in a society filled with racial discrimination, and you have a Booker T. Washington, Harriet Tubman, Marian Anderson, George Washington Carver or Martin Luther King Jr.
Make him the first child to survive in a poor Italian family of eighteen children, and you have an Enrico Caruso.
Afflict him with periods of depression so severe that he cut off his own ear, and you have a Vincent van Gogh.
Tell her in the late 1800s and early 1900s that only men can be scientists, and you have a Madame Curie, who eventually won two Nobel Prizes - one for physics and the other for chemistry.
Tell a young boy who loved to sketch and draw that he has no talent, and you have Walt Disney.
Take a crippled child whose only home he ever knew was an orphanage, and you have a James E. West, who became the first chief executive of the Boy Scouts of America.
Make him a second fiddle in an obscure South American orchestra, and you have a Toscanini.
Abigail Van Buren
There could be a “great” in our midst. Let’s look around and perhaps find our own “great in 2008”.

“Happy Valentine’s Day”

Every February candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged. February has long been a month of romance. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he became associated with this ancient rite? One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree continued to perform marriages in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. According to legend, Valentine actually sent the first ‘valentine’ greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed Valentine fell in love with a young girl-she may have been his jailor’s daughter-who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed ‘From your Valentine’. The first true Valentine card was sent in 1415 by Charles, duke of Orleans, to his wife while imprisoned in the Tower of London. Valentine cards as we know them have been sent since Victorian times. Originally, handmade and decorated with pictures of hearts, flowers, birds and lots of lace they were traditionally sent anonymously, even going as far as disguising the handwriting or posting in another town.

For Your Health

From: Family Circle Magazine Feb 08
The Flavanol Factor
Chocolate’s natural flavanols help keep the blood vessels smooth and pliable, and naturally thin the blood, making it less likely to clot.

Preliminary studies show that cocoa flavanols can help blood flow throughout the body, resulting in improved skin quality and even a boost in your brain power.

You don’t need to overindulge. In a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, eating about 30 calories a day-that’s less than half an ounce of dark chocolate (try one square of Dave dark chocolate)-was associated with a lowering of blood pressure without weight gain or other adverse effects.
